CHAPTER 6

C athy

My father stared at me as though I’d grown horns. But I wished I were blind because the shock and disappointment in his eyes broke my heart. He’d just heard my big news while I was upchucking in the restroom with the door open.

I groaned, and it sounded awful as the bitter taste of vomit stuck to my throat and tongue, assailing my nostrils.

"Jess, I have to go. Call you later," I snapped into the phone, ending the call to a slew of her protests and feeling like someone had thrown a bucket of ice cold water over me. Margie had been warning me about telling Dad and I didn’t—now I felt like a complete idiot. I should have stopped sabotaging myself and listened to her.

I looked up at my father, heat rising to my cheeks.

He raised an eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with unspoken questions, then cleared his throat again.

"Knocked up, huh?" His voice was hoarse, coming out at the end like a croak.

I bit my bottom lip as my face turned into a furnace. God, I was so embarrassed.

"It just happened, Dad. None of this was planned and we have been trying to tell you for a while," I explained.

He shook his head, but smiled fleetingly. Then, he got serious. He let out a big sigh. For a moment there, he looked so exhausted. Utterly worn out. Oh, dear. “Let’s go to the garden now and have a chat.”

I headed outside to the bench and he came to sit down next to me, then leaned down with his elbows on his knees, hands linked as if in prayer. “When your mother died, I promised myself I would take care of you always.”

“And you did.” I adjusted the collar of his shirt, then rested my head on his shoulder. “I couldn’t ask for a better dad. You even dedicated an entire resort to me.” It was such a surprise to learn he had opened a hotel complex called “Darcy & C Ocean Resort” on Tybee Island recently. The ‘C’ stood for my initial, the ‘Darcy’ for my favorite book boyfriend. His reasoning was that he wouldn’t
